Managing Loneliness
By Margaret Paul, Ph.D.

My experience from 37 years of counseling individuals and couples is that most of the problems from which people suffer stem from how they handle the events of life, rather than the events themselves.

Certainly traumatic and tragic events such as loss of loved ones, financial loss, and health issues are extremely challenging. However, some people manage to move through these events with equanimity, while others remain stuck in fear, anxiety, and depression. The difference is in how people handle deeply painful feelings.

I have discovered that there are two core feelings that most people will do almost anything to avoid feeling: loneliness and helplessness.

Loneliness is an intense empty, sad, sinking or burning feeling within. This feeling can be triggered by four different situations:

1) Loss of a loved one.

2) Not having a partner, family or friends with whom to share time and love.

3) Being around others but being closed off to them.

4) Being around others when they are closed off to you.

Other than a traumatic loss, the latter is often the most challenging in everyday life, and this can occur throughout the day. For example, you walk into work happy and open. You greet your friend, and he or she barely responds to you. If you are truly open to your own feelings, you will feel a stab of loneliness. Yet most people are so closed off to this feeling that they immediately attempt to avoid the feeling with some kind of addictive behavior. They might grab a donut while shaming or blaming - telling themselves that they must have done something wrong or that their friend is a jerk. These addictive behaviors are geared to protect against feeling the pain of the loneliness. And they work for the moment to appease the feeling, but the feeling doesn’t actually go away. It just goes deeper within and may eventually cause physical symptoms, such as back pain or some form of illness.

Helplessness is a similar feeling to loneliness – intense inner turmoil. In the example above, not only do you have the stab of loneliness, but you also feel the pain of helplessness over your friend’s behavior. You cannot make him or her connect with you. However, because this is such a difficult feeling, you don’t want to know that you cannot have control over another or over the outcome of things. To avoid knowing about your lack of control, you may shame yourself: “It’s my fault. If I’m different, I can get others to be different.” Or you might blame your friend, attempting to get him or her to change. Both shame and blame are attempts to avoid accepting helplessness over others.

Once you turn to addictive behaviors such as food, alcohol, drugs, activities, shame and blame, you have abandoned yourself. In attempting to avoid feeling the loneliness and helplessness, you have created inner aloneness – self-abandonment. Self-abandonment occurs when your intent is to avoid pain rather than lovingly attend to your authentic feelings. The combination of avoiding loneliness, helplessness and the aloneness that comes from inner abandonment can lead to anxiety, depression and despair. People then often turn to prescription drugs to further avoid their feelings.

Managing the feelings of loneliness and helplessness is not as hard as you may think it is. If you practice the following process, you will find that you do not need to use your various addictions to avoid pain.

1) Stay tuned into your body/feelings so that you know when you are feeling lonely or helpless. It’s very important to be able to name the feeling, and it may take some time to recognize these feelings since you may have been avoiding them for so long.

2) Welcome and embrace the feelings, opening with deep compassion for these feelings. If you are connected with a spiritual Source of love and compassion, open to this Source and ask for help in being in compassion for the feelings.

3) Hold the feelings as you would a child who is hurting, with deep love and understanding. Just be with the feelings with deep acceptance of them for a few minutes.

4) Consciously be willing to release the feelings. Imagine the feelings of loneliness and helplessness moving through you and being released into the Universe – into Divine Love.

You will find that these painful feelings will quickly release if you practice these steps rather than abandon yourself in the face of painful events and experiences.]]>

Margaret Island – Paradise in Budapest

Sunday, February 26th, 2006

Margaret Island

Margaret Island is one of the unique elements of Budapest. The island is located in the middle of the Danube River in central Budapest and is a little more than 1 mile long and 500 yards wide. With the exception of a hotel at the south end, the island is free of cars and buildings.

Historically, Margaret Island served as a private park for Hungarian royalty and you can see why. The island consists mostly of paths flanked by old growth trees, rose gardens and tailored lawn areas. Peacocks walk freely around the island and wild ducks nest throughout the island. At the south end of the island, you can visit hot thermal springs, walk on paths through peaceful ponds or relax in front of tiered water cascades. During part of the year, plays are undertaken at an outdoor theatre.

The island is named after Princess Margaret, the daughter of King Bela IV. If the beauty of the island is a reflection of the Princess, she must have been one impressive woman.

These days, the island is open to the public and serves as a recreation area. During the weekdays, workers in Budapest pour out of the city and onto the island for lunch breaks. Only in Budapest can you be in the middle of an active city, walk 200 feet across a bridge and be in a peaceful, forested area.

Traveling can be hectic and stressful. If you’re feeling this way in Budapest, a visit to Margaret Island should provide a cure.]]>

MDINA, ‘THE WALLED, SILENT CITY OF GHOSTS’…

Saturday, February 25th, 2006

A silent city by day where automobiles are generally off-limits (more out of respect for the ghosts of the city), Mdina really comes alive at night when hundreds of twinkling lamps and lanterns dotted within the walled interiors of the city transform the narrow, curved streets leading onto bastions and palace courtyards into something out of a fairytale. You can enjoy a delicious al-fresco meal at one of the countless restaurants of Mdina and enjoy a glass of chilled beer in any one of the bars under the glittering lights of this exotic walled city.

This old, medieval capital of Malta rises high above the Maltese Islands and offers panoramic vistas of the city. Many walking tours and scenic bus tours are available to discover the hidden delights of this magical city.

The Maltese Islands are at the very heart of the Mediterranean and are often referred to as the islands of sunshine and history. Less than a three hour flight from the UK and with a good range of airlines such as Air Malta and GB Airways operating daily flights from Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted, Manchester and Birmingham as well as low cost carriers now operating from other regional airports, it has never been easier to get to Malta for a quick getaway or a longer holiday. Whether you’re after a weekend break or a fortnight in the sun, you’ll find it all on www.mymalta.co.uk, the Malta specialists. Book your trip online and receive great savings on luxury hotels and cheap flights as well as a regular e-letter updating you on regular special free night offers, room upgrades and heavily discounted holiday packages.

Once you’ve seen the ancient city of Malta and its walled city of Mdina, been done by some innocent looking street vendor offering you a once-in-a-lifetime bargain and relaxed on the soft honeycomb at Ghadira Bay…it’s then time to go diving! Malta offers amazing diving and water sport opportunities for both beginners and advanced open water and cave divers in its tiny, unspoilt island of Comino with its stunning blue lagoon. All visitors to Malta should take the time to visit the uninhabited island of Comino and the tranquil, green island of Gozo. Day trips to nearby Italian and Sicilian cities are very popular with tourists who can get there by car and passenger ferries.]]>

Milan – the capital of the Northern Italy

Thursday, February 23rd, 2006

It’s the city full of the ancient art masterpieces. Moreover, Milan is one of leaders in the area the Italians are crazy for – football. The local football club is always among the best in Serie A championship.
Despite all its advantages, Milan isn’t the most popular travel destination in Italy. The most of the tourists prefer to see the hills of Toscana and the canals of Venice. Milan is considered to be the industrial city with the very fast rhythm of life. Many find that Milan looks more like European than Italian city. The citizens of Milan gained the reputation of the reserved and cold-blooded people.
Milan long history is full of foreign invaders – Goths in 539, Romans in 1157 and the list of the French, Spanish and Austrian rulers.
The most popular Milan entertainment, attracting the significant part of tourist is shopping. From 1277 to 1500 Visconti and Sforza families ruled the city. The biggest part of the Gothic and Renaissance masterpieces were created during their rule, although both dynasties were known for their cruelty besides their love for art.
The center of the city is relatively small and very comfortable for walks, but it’s better not to use car – the traffic jams are common in Milan.
The heart of the city is Piazza Duomo with the several interesting sights around it. Duomo Cathedral on the main cultural attraction in Milan. It’s opened from 9.00 till 12.00 and from 14.30 till 18.00. The construction of the cathedral was begun in 1386 and was fully completed only in 1813. Duomo is one the biggest Gothic cathedrals in the world. Its magnificent beauty charms and the interior strikes with its greatness.
The monument to Vittorio Emmanuel is the centre of the square and it’s the very popular meeting place among tourists.
Vittorio Emmanuel gallery begins with the Triumph Arc on the square and transforms into the glass street. Nowadays it’s the centre of the cultural life of Milan – there are the famous bookstores, cafes and restaurants.
To the right of the cathedral you can see the yellow building of the Royal Palace, which once has been the Duke’s Visconti palace. In 1943 it was hardly damaged but later restored. Now it houses the museum of the modern art and the Duomo museum.
The most exciting Milan entertainment, attracting the crowds of tourists, is shopping. Milan is full of the fashion boutiques mostly on Via Montenapolone. Milan is considered to be one of world’s fashion capitals along with Paris, New York, Rome and London. Shopping is almost a religion here and in the season of discounts the whole city seems to go mad.

Motivational Quotes

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2006

Imagine going for a coffee break after spending hours working on a particular problem. Upon returning you see in bold vibrant colors a message on your desktop quoted from Napoleon Bonaparte - “Circumstances - what are circumstances? I make circumstances.” Instantly you are charged with renewed energy and get back to your unfinished work.

“77 Motivational Screensaver Quotes” is a screensaver program with famous quotes. Each slide focuses on a single quote with vivid jewel toned colors that can uplift mood instantly.

I think this product can be an interesting thing to have on your desktop. Of the 77 screensaver quotes, here are a few:

* Victory is not won in miles but in inches. Win a little now, hold your ground, and later win a little more.
-Louis L’Amour

* If you hear a voice within you say you cannot paint, then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.
-Vincent Van Gogh

* The thing always happens that you really believe in, and the belief in a thing makes it happen.
-Frank Lloyd Wright

* If we all did the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.
-Thomas Edison

* Most success springs from an obstacle or failure. I became a cartoonist largely because I failed in my goal of becoming a successful executive.
-Scott Adams (Dilbert)

I especially liked one of the quotes above by Louis L’Amour - “Victory is not won in miles but in inches. Win a little now, hold your ground, and later win a little more.” We obtained a large business contract this way. It wasn’t a single large factor that led the client to choose us. It was small incremental steps like a solid proposal, good presentation, highly recommended client testimonials, good public relations, and more that led towards winning the contract.

Mumbai (Bombay), India - Getting In Touch With Your Fellow Man

Tuesday, February 21st, 2006

Mumbai - Bombay

Mumbai is located on the west coast of India and is a sight to be seen. Until 1997, the city was known as Bombay, but the government for some esoteric reason changed the name. “Mumbai” was the name used by locals for years and refers to a local goddess. Most of the city buildings and agencies still incorporate Bombay into their names. I know it gets confusing which is more or less a good way to describe the city.

A little know fact about Bombay is the geographic nature of the city. When originally settled, the city was actually a collection of islands. As the need for land has grown over the years, the water has been pushed back to the point where all the islands are now connected in one land mass. How’s that for a topic at a party?

Serenity

If you’re looking for a serene vacation destination, Bombay is simply the worst place you could go. Upwards of 17 million people live in the city. Spend a week there and you’ll feel like you’ve rubbed up against every one of them. The city is so packed with people that getting from point “A” to point “B” can take forever. You will not find a secluded restaurant, tourist attraction or spot on the beach. Don’t even begin to think otherwise.

Attractions

Bombay is full of interesting things to see if you can get to them. Victoria Train Station is definitely worth taking in for the unique architecture and absolute masses of people. The gardens at Horniman Circle are good for a stroll and one place where you won’t feel completely overwhelmed with masses of humanity. For a humorous time, you can hit the beaches looking for one of the movie crews. Yep, Bombay is the home of the movie industry in India and is often referred to as “Bollywood.”

In reality, the best thing to see in Bombay is Bombay. Just get out and walk. You’ll see snake charmers, vendors hawking everything under the sun, the occasional elephant and taxi drivers that put a New York cabbie to shame.

Poverty

India has serious poverty issues in the larger cities. Bombay has a brutal poverty problem. As much as 30 percent of the population is living in severe poverty. By severe, I am referring to people living in cardboard shacks with no running water and so on. Even the most seasoned traveler will be overwhelmed. If you are going to visit Bombay, be prepared for it emotionally.

Whether you call it Bombay or Mumbai, there is no denying the uniqueness of this city. Some travelers can’t stand it while others find it intoxicating. Of course, you’ll never know if you don’t give it a visit.]]>

Munich Germany — 10 Insider Tips

Monday, February 20th, 2006

If you would like to know something about the city and its history, visit my website for information about that. In this article I will let you know of 12 insider tips of this German city -– short and sweet –- so that you can print them out and easily scour the sights.

First, once you arrive in the city, go to the tourist information office. It is located at Munich Germany main station (outside) or at Marienplatz (downtown).

Also, since you already know that this city is venue of the well-known Oktoberfest, there is actually no need for me to tell you anything about that, right?

Now, shall we get started? Great! :-)

TOP 10 Bars and Restaurants

1. An absolute must-see and must-experience is the “Hundskugel” (Dogs Ball) located in Hotterstrasse in old town. This is Munich’s oldest house which has the perfect ambience for original Bavarian food (e.g. “Schweinshaxe” — knuckle of pork). Quite frankly, once you were here, your friends will become envious you were there without them.

2. The “Schuhbecks in den Suedtiroler Stuben” (Schubecks in the South Tyrol Rooms) is a tavern with notable factor. They serve original Bavarian cuisine in high quality. It is located at “Platzl” in old town.

3. Another excellent restaurant with original Bavarian cuisine is “Gasthaus Beim Sedlmayr” (Tavern by Sedlmayr). The funny and happy waiters make your time even more glamorous and jollier. Their menu has “all you ever need” once you are in Munich.

4. The “Haxnbauer im Scholastikahaus” (sorry, I’m not able to translate that yet…;-), located next to Marienplatz in Sparkassenstrasse, inspires visitors to stay longer than they might want once they enter. It’s just amazing, old woody walls and tables, smelling beer and meat, just unforgettable.

5. If you are looking for a chance to see famous football stars and actors, you have to go to the noble P1. I must admit it is not easy to enter this exceptional bar, but definitely worth more than one try. You will find it in Prinzregentenstrasse. The location is, however, quite hidden. Only a small sign beside stairs refers to the legendary club discotheque. Tip: It might be a bit easier if you go in as a couple.

Sightseeing and culture

6. Stroll along Ludwigstrasse. Ludwig I. underlined the royal Munich with this classicistic boulevard. As a road of sciences, the Ludwigstrasse (Ludwigstreet) is one of the most monumental and most generous roads created in the 19th century. The monument of king Ludwig I on Odeonsplatz, created by Max Widmann, reminds of the owners and name giver who had to withdraw in 1848 after the Lola Montez affair.

7. The Maximilianstrasse (Maximilian Street) spreads still old flair while strolling through this historical street. With museums and theatres, galleries and numerous exclusive shops, this splendour road certainly belongs to the most distinguished addresses of Munich Germany.

8. Are you art and historical interested? Then walk along the Prinzregentenstrasse (Prince Regent Road). It is considered as museum mile. Prince Regent Luitpold let put on this avenue road at the end of the 19th century.

9. The Englischer Garten (English Gardens) is Munich Germany’s famous 900-acre park. It is actually starting in the heart of the city and transitioning into the countryside. The park offers shaded paths for walking and cycling in summer and picturesque frozen lakes in winter. In addition, it contains four beer gardens (Chinesischer Turm, Seehaus, Hirschau, Aumeister), whose invite to stay long after sunset.

10. Marienplatz is world-wide well-known with the “new” Neo-Gothic City Hall and its “Gingle Bells” sounds. Acutally a huge square with some interesting taverns. Visit http://www.smart-travel-germany.com/munich.html for additional information and images. By the way, from Munich Germany’s main station, it is a quite short way to downtown and old town — just a few minutes walk.

Enjoy your trip!

All the best,

Must Read Tips For Shopping & Booking Your Travels Online

Sunday, February 19th, 2006

Before you go booking your trip online, read our tips on doing so to ensure you find the best deals and are protected in the process…

1. Shop around:
This has been our motto from the start. We are finding that prices change all the time, so it is important to look around for the best travel deal.

Besides searching our site, we have provided our favorite sites (with reviews) for finding the best deals.

Don’t get paralysis on analysis though. We recommend you pick a price (be reasonable though) and search until you find it- once you find it- take it!!

2. The more flexible you are the better:
Hey, I know when you travel with kids or a group of people, being flexible isn’t an option.

If you can be flexible, it will help, that’s all. Things like flying on certain days (like Saturday or mid-week), or specific times (10pm-6am for example) could be a benefit.

3. Join Frequent Flyer Programs:
This is a travel tip. You don’t have to fly every other month to benefit from these programs. If you use credit cards, you might as well get something back.

Heck, we pay them enough in charges that you deserve something in return. Just pick your favorite airline(s) and sign up for an airline mile card!

4. Read:
Sign up for e-zines.

You can set up a free email account if you don’t want these piling up in your in-box. Many of them have an opt-out section that allows you to quit receiving emails once you are done.

They usually provide up-to-date alerts on what deals are out there. Also, you might want to look into a few information products about traveling on a budget or getting great deals!!

There are experts out there who have been there and done that and know how to take advantage of great opportunities.

5. Know all the terms and conditions:
This is a very important cheap deal travel reminder.
For example, you will want to know if your quotes are locked in immediately or how long you have til you must decide, what their refund policy is, cancellation policy, if their site is safe when you enter your information (if you see a golden key or padlock at the bottom in the toolbar, then you will be fine), changes you might need to make, and so forth. You don’t want to get trapped into something that you can’t get out of.

6. Get Coupons:
Getting your hands on coupons can save you tons of money off various travel necessities. You can find valuable money savers with coupon books.
Other cheap deal travel tips to consider…

7. Check a few sites & once you find your price, go bid at an auction site like Priceline, at a lower price.

8. Book all in one. Sometimes if you book your airfare, car, & hotel or a combo of the three, you can get a better cheap deal. Don’t be afraid to ask!!

9. For flights, you can also do things like get bumped/stay over, fly out of another airport in your region (consider gas & driving and if that’s worth it), & consider 1-2 or more connections (no-stop flights can be expensive).

Bonus tips when shopping online in general…

·Do online shopping with companies you know. We provide some places that give you a good start. You can also compare offline or with major retail chain’s websites.
·Keep your passwords private and choose them wisely.
·Keep good records. This protects you if something arises.
·Check out the company’s security policy and privacy policy. These are typically located at the bottom of the page. Or, look under site map or company information.
·Read the legal terms. These policies let you know what they do with any information you provide.
·Get their contact information. Try it out if need be. Make sure you know how to get a hold of someone.
·Make sure before you purchase, you read their return/refund policies.
·Review all descriptions of products, shipping & handling terms, and any other pertinent information you want to know. This should all be outlined for you.]]>
